3.0     Additional Functionality for SQL

Databases that have table or field names with spaces can now be used in the SQL Connect dialog. In ArcView GIS Version 3.1, table and field names are automatically enclosed with database specific quote characters. With these quote characters, queries using tables and column  names with spaces will be processed correctly by the ODBC driver.

The format of dates returned from a database using SQL Connect has
changed in ArcView GIS Version 3.1. The new format is 'yyyy-MM-dd hhh:m:s.

If you attempt to perform an invalid operation on a database using ArcView GIS Version 3.1, error messages from the ODBC driver are written to a file called ODBC.errlog located in the $AVHOME directory. If you do not have write permissions for the $AVHOME directory, the file is written in the $HOME directory. For more information about the contents of this file, refer to the What's New in ArcView GIS Version 3.1 book.

4.0 Known Issues and Limitations

To run Seagate Crystal Reports on both operating systems of a dual boot machine (i.e., on both Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98), you must install the software under both operating systems.  After you have installed Crystal Reports under one of the operating systems, during the installation on the other operating system, the Crystal Report's installation will inform you that an earlier version of Seagate Crystal Reports currently exists and asks you if you wish to replace it with the new version.  You must proceed with the installation to install Crystal Reports in both operating systems.

The Crystal Reports installation program will incorrectly prompt you to run your ODBC administrator.  Please disregard this message.

If the full Crystal Reports software is not installed, selecting Launch Crystal Reports from the Project File menu (with the Report Writer extension loaded) results in an error message.

On Windows 98, an ODBC error will occur when opening a project that connects to an Oracle 8.0 database from the command prompt or when opening the project using a shortcut on the desktop. You can successfully open the project using the ArcView GIS interface. For additional details regarding Oracle Database and Windows 98 support, please refer to the Oracle web page at www.oracle.com.

Queries will be slower in ArcView GIS Version 3.1 than in Version 3.0a because of the many changes made to SQL Connect. These changes were necessary because in Version 3.0a, we used a 3rd party product with SQL Connect that has since become out-dated. Since this software is not current, there have been many problems reported involving compatibility with newer drivers. To ensure that ArcView GIS Version 3.1 will be compatible with current and future ODBC drivers, we have re-engineered SQL Connect using a native ODBC implementation. While queries are slower with the new implementation, SQL Connect is much more stable than it was in previous versions of ArcView GIS and virtually all of the compatibility problems have been resolved.

ArcView GIS Version 3.1 installs eight TrueType fonts into your system's font directory.  The exact filenames and file locations are detailed in Section 2.0 of this readme file.  The characters in these fonts are used by ArcView GIS as marker symbols.  If you see green and black letters in ArcView GIS's Symbol Window instead of marker symbols, then ArcView GIS's fonts are not properly installed or not installed at all.  To correct this problem, we recommend that you remove any ESRI fonts that are installed on your system, reboot, and then reinstall ArcView GIS Version 3.1.

ArcPress:
A node installation from an ArcView GIS Version 3.1 administrative installation containing ArcPress Version 2.0 will result in the ArcView GIS Version 3.1 Program Item being renamed to ArcView GIS Version 3.0a.

To avoid this from occurring, prior to performing a node installation, simply copy the setup.ins file from the ArcView GIS Version 3.1 CD-ROM media (<drive_letter>:\setup.ins) to the administrative installation's AVSETUP directory.

If a node installation was completed prior to copying the setup.ins file to the administrative installation's AVSETUP directory, the incorrect ArcView GIS Program Item icon will appear. To correct the program item names, copy the setup.ins file from the ArcView GIS Version 3.1 CD-ROM media, as indicated above, to the administrative installation's AVSETUP directory and run setup from the AVSETUP directory again.

You may refer to the ArcView GIS on-line help system for additional information concerning  known issues in ArcView GIS.

5.0 Documentation

Digital copies of the hardcopy books, "What's New in ArcView GIS Version 3.1", and "ArcView GIS Version 3.1 Installation Guide" (which you also received in your ArcView GIS Version 3.1 package) will be installed with ArcView GIS Version 3.1 for your convenience.  These books are files in Portable Document Format (PDF).  After ArcView GIS Version 3.1 has been installed, these files, newin31.pdf and av31inst.pdf,  will be located in the av_gis30\avdocs installation directory. To view and print PDF files, you will need to install the Acrobat Reader from Adobe. For your convenience, we have provided an installation of the Adobe Acrobat Reader located in the <CD-ROM>:\acrobat3 directory.  You can also obtain the Acrobat Reader free from Adobe's home page at www.adobe.com.
